During these most difficult times of anger, hurt, polarization and divisiveness I have struggled to find my voice, my direction, my role in navigating this chaos. It is most disheartening when I see my fellow Americans, especially loved ones and people I respect, spewing words of hatred and humiliation toward one another, terminating long-standing relationships, turning our backs on civility and respect. Until three days ago, I had never heard of Valarie Kaur or “See no Stranger”. Though a bit leery of a book cover that claims a “manifesto of revolutionary love”, I ordered the kindle edition and couldn’t stop reading. I finished the book yesterday and I’m ready for a second reading. I don’t want to continue preaching to/listening to my own choir. I don’t want to be mired in anger and despair. I don’t want to be silent and indifferent. I don’t want to point fingers, insult and blame. So, what do I do? How do I contribute to finding solutions that bring us together. How do I open my heart to a person who is seemingly despicable? In a most powerful way, Valarie Kaur has shined a light on what I already knew, on what all of the major spiritual leaders through history have taught .... I do it with love .... I do it by constantly reminding myself “you are a part of me I do not yet know”. Now that is a challenge. Can I, will I, live up to the definition of a warrior/sage!
